Free Range Chickens
The chickens that we supply, from Childhay Manor, are a hybrid
strain, called Hubbard 257. They have been specially bred
to provide all that is required of them. They are slow growing,
so that they don’t get too big too quickly; they are
hardy to English weather, enjoying being outside in the rain,
or in the sunshine; they also produce very succulent meat
with a wonderful texture and delicious taste.
Our chickens are put into insulated arcs at 1 day old, and
are kept in the arcs under gas brooders, for warmth until
they are about 3 weeks old. If they went outside before this,
the magpies would eat them.
They are then reared outside until about 12 weeks. They are
fed a GM free diet of pellets, with no growth promoters, no
hormones and no antibiotics added. They range around paddocks
which have no artificial fertilisers, no pesticides and no
herbicides sprayed on them.
These chickens live as natural a life as it is possible for
us to give them – a natural, free range life.
This can give you the confidence of full traceability, and
healthy meat for your plate.
Ducks
Our ducks are Peking X Aylesbury. They are reared outside,
again in a very natural environment. No herbicides, pesticides
or artificial fertilisers. They are fed a GM free ration,
specifically created for ducks.
The ducks are reared to 7 or 11 weeks, depending on the weight
that the customer requires.
Guinea Fowl
The guinea fowl are kept with the chickens so are reared
in exactly the same conditions. There is no wing clipping
on any of the birds, so keeping them with the chickens means
that they won't fly away.
This also means that they are good “alarm” birds
if a fox comes around.
